Dr. Mark S. Kindy research focus is on the developing and aging nervous system of humans and marine mammals. Specific emphasis is directed towards neuroinflammatory diseases.   • As a predoctoral student, I developed my PhD thesis in two main aspects, one was the determination of the molecular structure of the polymerase complex (PC) of the Infectious Bursal Diseas Virus (IBDV), a dsRNA virus, including in this aspect, the design, cloning, generation of recombinant baculoviruses expressing the proteins that form the PC, known as VP1 (polymerase) and VP3 (similar structure to transcription regulation factors), and purification of the recombinant proteins to a purity ready for crystallization assays to resolve the structure by Xray.
  • The other aspect was the study of the recombinant VP1 as a polymerase, conducting replication assays, alone with the polymerase or complexed with VP3 to determine its effect in the replication. On the other side, as VP3 is a ribonucleoprotein lining the viral dsRNA, I studied the interaction of VP3 with viral ssRNA and dsRNA.
  • As well I worked developing a Reverse Genetic System for IBDV based in viral cDNA expressed by recombinant Vaccinia viruses.
  • During my time as a postdoc at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), working in the Rotavirus Molecular Biology Section, I utilized a developed Reverse Genetic System (single-gene replacement system) to study the plasticity of Rotavirus (RV) to incorporate into its genome, duplications of its genetic material or foreign sequences, because have been found in nature
