Mental Health

Mental health is deeply affected in neurodegenerative disorders, with conditions such as depression, anxiety, apathy, agitation, and psychosis frequently co-occurring. These neuropsychiatric symptoms not only reduce quality of life but may also precede the onset of cognitive symptoms, acting as early indicators of disease. For example, depression is common in prodromal Alzheimer’s disease, while hallucinations and delusions are characteristic of dementia with Lewy bodies and Parkinson’s disease dementia. Pathophysiologically, mental health disturbances in neurodegeneration are linked to disruptions in neurotransmitter systems (e.g., dopamine, serotonin), limbic circuit dysfunction, neuroinflammation, and structural brain changes.

Assessment tools such as the Neuropsychiatric Inventory (NPI) and standardized depression/anxiety scales are commonly used. Treatment includes pharmacological options like antidepressants and antipsychotics, as well as non-pharmacological approaches such as psychotherapy, music therapy, and caregiver support. The journal invites interdisciplinary research that explores the biological underpinnings, clinical manifestation, and treatment strategies for mental health symptoms in neurodegenerative diseases, with an emphasis on integrative care models and patient-centered outcomes.
