Cataract

Cataract is a common eye condition where the eye’s natural lens becomes cloudy, leading to symptoms such as blurred vision, increased sensitivity to glare, and difficulty seeing at night. While most cataracts develop with age, they can also be caused by eye injuries, prolonged use of certain medications like steroids, diabetes, or present from birth. Cataracts are the leading cause of reversible blindness globally, and symptoms may include faded colors, double vision in one eye, and frequent changes in vision prescriptions.

Diagnosis involves a comprehensive eye exam, including visual acuity testing and a slit-lamp examination. The only effective treatment is cataract surgery, where the cloudy lens is removed and replaced with a clear artificial intraocular lens (IOL). This procedure is highly successful and widely performed, restoring clear vision and enhancing quality of life. Regular eye check-ups are essential for early detection and timely intervention.
